What to read when anxiety keeps you awake at 3am
It is always the same hour. Not midnight, when you could still call it a late night, and not dawn, when the day has at least started. Three in the morning is its own country, and it has its own kind of thinking.
What helps at 3am is rarely a whole chapter. It is one sentence you can hold.
Verses that meet anxiety where it actually is. “When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought joy to my soul.” (Psalm 94:19) “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” (1 Peter 5:7) “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” (Philippians 4:6)
Notice that none of these tell you to stop feeling anxious. They tell you where to put it.
One thing to do instead of replaying the day. Say the sentence slowly, then name one thing you are actually carrying. Not the whole pile — one thing. Anxiety is usually a fog around a specific worry, and naming it shrinks the fog.
If you want more to choose from. Some nights one verse is not enough and a whole list is too much; it helps to have a handful gathered for exactly this feeling. Bible verses about anxiety collects them in one place, so you are not searching at the hour when searching is hardest.
You do not have to solve the night. You only have to get through it with somewhere to put what you are carrying.
